The next time you have green onions, don't throw away the white ends. Simply submerge them in a glass of water and place them in a sunny window. Your onions will begin to grow almost immediately and can be harvested almost indefinitely. We just use kitchen scissors to cut what we need for meals and periodically empty out the water, rinse the roots off and give them fresh water.

Check out this wonderful tip from the Thrive Farm.

  1. Thank you Connie … this is wonderful and I’m definitely going to try this! It would be so great not to have to run to the store for green onions! Inevitably mine always seem to be past their prime when I reach for them.

  2. Thanks for this tip! We seem to go through a lot of green onions around here; I am forever running to the store for another bunch, but now I will just grow my own!

  3. That’s crazy! I’ve never heard of such a thing. I always seem to buy a big batch of spring onions and then have to hurry to think of things to use them for before they go bad….this would be an awesome solution to that problem.

    • yes. Living in the mountains it is not easy to get to a grocery store. I love ways to produce food on my own or get it to last longer. I am a huge canning freak but miss fresh food frequently. I am very excited about my garden this year!
