Reblogged from The Adventures of Thrive Farm:
The next time you have green onions, don't throw away the white ends. Simply submerge them in a glass of water and place them in a sunny window. Your onions will begin to grow almost immediately and can be harvested almost indefinitely. We just use kitchen scissors to cut what we need for meals and periodically empty out the water, rinse the roots off and give them fresh water.
Check out this wonderful tip from the Thrive Farm.
Thank you Connie … this is wonderful and I’m definitely going to try this! It would be so great not to have to run to the store for green onions! Inevitably mine always seem to be past their prime when I reach for them.
Yes. We cannot run to the store. The closest store is 45 minutes down the mountain. I love tips like this.
What?!?! I had no idea! I will have to try this. So I just put the little white root part into water and it will grow up into an entire onion?!
This is what I call stupid cool.
This absolutely works, as you’ll see here http://miskcooks.com/2012/02/23/and-i-just-keep-sprouting/ I’ve been doing this for years and years, and only have to buy spring onions once every few months.
Yay. A testimonial. I will definatly check it out.
Mung beans sprouting also. Homemade vinegar in the autumn is fun too.
I tried this too – I saw it on Pinterest somewhere. It worked great for about 2 months, then the bottoms seemed to get kinda squelchy and wrinkly. But for two months, it was great!
yes. That is what someone else said. It works for a couple of months then you need to replace the onions.
Thanks for this tip! We seem to go through a lot of green onions around here; I am forever running to the store for another bunch, but now I will just grow my own!
Oh! Hey, this is a great little tidbit. I’ve got some in the fridge that I’m going to stick in water today!
Now that is an excellent idea, otherwise they go soggy so quick I the fridge! Plus you get a cute live plant on your counter:)
Yes. I love the cute live plant part!!
Great tip! Thank you! I am going to try this.
Thanks for the tip!
Wow! The only thing is, the white part of scallions is the part I most like to eat. Oh well.
What an awesome idea! I am definitely going to try this! Thanks!
I just loved it that is why I needed to share…
That’s crazy! I’ve never heard of such a thing. I always seem to buy a big batch of spring onions and then have to hurry to think of things to use them for before they go bad….this would be an awesome solution to that problem.
yes. Living in the mountains it is not easy to get to a grocery store. I love ways to produce food on my own or get it to last longer. I am a huge canning freak but miss fresh food frequently. I am very excited about my garden this year!
I absolutely need to do this!!!
So simple. So easy! Thanks!
I saw this on another blog and tried it at home – it is amazing! And so fast! It’s great to spread the word!
